Friends of North Third is a group of volunteers that care about the North Third Reservoir.

The group was set up, organically, in 2020, in response to significant littering issues that arose at the end of the 2020 Lockdown. Friends of North Third is made up of visitors and residents who care deeply about the area and have taken the initiative to clear up the litter left by irresponsible visitors. The impact of their work is immense. Each week they collect multiple bags of litter, from tents to crisp packets, and everything in between. They have even removed an old burnt-out caravan. The groups litter picks are social occasions, with all ages getting involved.

Since 2021 the group have been supported by the VRG Project Development Officer and have developed links with Scottish Water, who own the reservoir. Through this partnership the group hopes to support further measures to care for, protect and enhance the North Third Reservoir area.

Along side regular litter picks engagement activities are also taking place. In summer of 2021 Friends of North Third, Scottish Water and VRG invited several local secondary schools to take part in a poster competition, to highlight the importance of caring for, and protecting the local wildlife. Winning posters will be put up around the reservoir during the summer. There are also plans to provide individual ‘litter picking kits’ to regular visitors who would like to clear litter as they enjoy their walks around the area. Through Scottish Water a programme of community consultation on the use and facilities at the reservoir is due to take place in 2021.

If you’d like to get involved join the Friends of North Third Facebook Group to find out when litter picks are taking place and keep up to date with the group’s activities, or get in touch using the Contact Us button.
